Reduced stream flows from drought and water extraction concentrate pollution and reduce invertebrate prey, causing individual platypuses to expend more energy foraging in depleted waterways. Netting in rivers and dams trap platypuses that drown. Land clearing removes riparian vegetation, increasing water temperatures and degrading stream structure.
