Hamsters are one of the most widely kept small pets, yet standard pet store advice results in conditions that cause significant chronic stress in these complex animals.
Hamster welfare failures are systemic and begin at point of purchase. Pet stores sell wheel-and-cage setups that are dramatically undersized for an animal evolved to travel kilometers nightly. Small wheels cause spinal curvature. Insufficient bedding prevents burrowing — a core behavioral need so strong that hamsters show stereotypic behavior in its absence. Syrian hamsters housed with companions fight fatally. Germany has proposed minimum cage sizes of 1 square meter — fifty times larger than a typical US pet store cage. The scientific case for hamster welfare reform is compelling and largely ignored.
