Ornamental fish welfare is compromised throughout the supply chain from producer to retailer to keeper. Overcrowded retail tanks with poor water quality expose fish to chronic stress and disease. Fish sold in unsuitable conditions, including goldfish in round bowls and betta fish in tiny containers, live in permanent welfare deprivation. Keeper ignorance about appropriate tank size, filtration, cycling and species compatibility causes preventable suffering for millions of fish. The short lifespan of many ornamental fish in suboptimal conditions - often months rather than the years they would achieve in appropriate conditions - reflects the scale of ongoing welfare failure in the hobby.
