Whether cats should be kept indoors or allowed outdoor access is one of the most debated questions in companion animal welfare, involving tradeoffs between cat wellbeing and wildlife conservation.
The debate is genuine because both positions involve real welfare stakes. Outdoor cats experience behavioral richness — hunting, exploration, social contact with other animals — that enriches their lives. But outdoor access also exposes them to cars, disease, fighting, and predation. Indoor cats without adequate enrichment develop frustration-related behaviors including aggression, overgrooming, and inappropriate elimination. The welfare solution is not binary but involves providing indoor cats with play, vertical space, puzzle feeders, and where possible, safe outdoor access via cat runs or enclosed gardens.
