Research from the Chittka lab and others has demonstrated that bumblebees show state-dependent behavioral changes consistent with negative emotional states. Bees exposed to simulated predator attacks subsequently show pessimistic responses to ambiguous stimuli — a pattern seen across vertebrates as an indicator of negative affect. This does not definitively prove conscious suffering, but it suggests that bumblebees may have welfare-relevant states that go beyond simple reflex responses. The scale of pesticide exposure and habitat loss for bee colonies gives this emerging science practical urgency.
