Welfare Considerations

Most commercially sold hamster cages in the UK, US, and Europe fall dramatically below welfare standards. The German minimum cage size is 5,400 sq cm — most sold cages are under 1,000 sq cm. Hamsters in inadequate housing develop chronic stress, bar-biting, and stereotypies. The industry continues to sell demonstrably harmful products without regulation.

What You Can Do

Provide at minimum a 40-gallon tank or equivalent space for a Syrian hamster
Use deep substrate (6+ inches) for natural burrowing behavior
Provide a wheel at least 10-12 inches in diameter with a solid running surface
Adopt from a rescue rather than purchasing from a pet store
Advocate for minimum cage size standards to be enacted in your country
