Shearwaters are exceptional ocean voyagers whose welfare is threatened by longline fishing bycatch, light pollution, and fledgling disorientation.
Longline bycatch causes drowning as birds dive for bait hooks and become entangled underwater. Fledglings grounded in towns face vehicle strikes, cat attacks, starvation, and dehydration. These are preventable harms at scale. Bird-safe longline modifications including streamer lines and night-setting are highly effective and adopted rapidly when incentivized.
