Welfare Considerations

Primates in research suffer from social isolation, barren environments, painful procedures, and the chronic stress of laboratory life. Macaques develop stereotypic behaviors and depression. Chimpanzees retired from research still show PTSD symptoms decades later. Even with enrichment programs, laboratories cannot replicate the social complexity and freedom of wild primate life.
