Welfare Considerations

Pigeons that become lost during races face starvation, dehydration, predation, and exhaustion. Race releases in unsuitable weather have caused mass deaths of tens of thousands of birds. Surviving racing pigeons often arrive home in exhausted, dehydrated states with injuries. The voluntary nature of the sport does not eliminate welfare responsibilities for the birds used.
