Farmed rabbits endure some of the most severe confinement in any livestock system. Wire cages prevent all natural behavior including jumping, turning, standing upright, and social interaction. Hock sores from wire flooring are virtually universal. The lack of any EU welfare legislation for rabbits means this sector operates outside any binding welfare framework. Rabbits are prey animals with extremely acute stress responses that are continuously triggered by intensive confinement.
