Cetacean strandings kill thousands of whales and dolphins annually; mass strandings cause enormous individual suffering at scale.
Beached cetaceans experience organ failure from inability to support their own weight out of water, skin burns from sun exposure, and dehydration. Death can take days. Mass strandings require intensive human rescue efforts with limited success for larger animals. Acoustic trauma from naval sonar causes hemorrhage around the ears and brain of whales, causing disorientation that leads to stranding. The suffering of individually stranded cetaceans is acute and prolonged.
