Snares cause suffering from the moment of capture through the death or rescue of the animal. Wire cuts into flesh as animals struggle, causing lacerations, joint damage, and circulatory restriction. Animals struggle until exhausted, then suffer as injuries worsen. Self-locking snares tighten with every movement. Even free-running snares cause significant suffering through the capture and holding period. More humane alternatives exist for all purposes snares are used.
