Welfare Considerations

The welfare gap between what hamsters need and what they typically receive in pet care is one of the largest in the companion animal world. A hamster in a standard pet store cage with a 6-inch wheel on a plastic floor has approximately the same relationship to its needs as a person kept in a closet for life. The welfare problems are predictable, documented, and entirely preventable with appropriate housing.

Provide minimum 40-gallon tank or 450 sq in floor space for a Syrian hamster
Offer deep substrate (6+ inches) for natural burrowing behavior
Provide a solid-surface wheel at least 10-12 inches in diameter
Add foraging opportunities by hiding food in substrate rather than using a bowl
