The welfare costs of conventional crop farming to wildlife are enormous but largely invisible. Hares and fawns cut by harvesting equipment die from injuries. Deer caught in combine harvesters experience catastrophic trauma. Pesticides cause paralysis and death in non-target invertebrates. These harms occur at the scale of hundreds of millions of acres of farmland globally. Organic and regenerative farming dramatically reduce all these welfare costs.
