Animals in hoarding situations suffer from a combination of neglect, crowding, disease, and lack of veterinary care. Dead animals are often found among living ones. Survivors are frequently severely malnourished, heavily parasitized, and socially traumatized. Rescue operations involving hundreds of animals simultaneously overwhelm shelters and require extraordinary coordination. Without simultaneous mental health treatment for the hoarder, intervention reliably fails — hoarding resumes quickly. Integrated responses combining animal welfare agencies, mental health services, and legal intervention have the best outcomes for both animals and hoarders.
