Goats routinely undergo disbudding, castration, and hoof trimming, often without adequate pain relief. Improving pain management is a priority welfare intervention.
Goats are among the most numerous farmed animals globally, kept for meat, milk, and fiber. Yet pain management during routine husbandry procedures lags behind that in cattle and sheep, partly due to fewer licensed veterinary products and less regulatory attention to goat welfare. Research confirms that goats experience significant procedural pain and that combinations of local anesthetic and NSAID analgesics substantially reduce that pain. Updating protocols to include effective analgesia is feasible and relatively inexpensive.
