Snake welfare in captivity is poorly understood by many keepers and inadequately covered in most husbandry guides. Studies show that snakes provided with larger enclosures, appropriate temperature gradients, hiding opportunities, and substrate for burrowing show lower stress hormones and higher activity levels than those in minimal setups. The common recommendation that snakes thrive in small vivaria 'because they feel secure' is not supported by evidence. Snakes are active, explorative animals that benefit from environments allowing natural behaviors including thermoregulation, hunting, and spatial exploration.
