Animal welfare science has expanded beyond preventing negative states to promoting positive experiences. Understanding farm animal positive emotions opens new welfare possibilities.
Traditional animal welfare frameworks focused primarily on preventing suffering, pain, hunger, and fear. Contemporary welfare science recognizes that good welfare also requires positive experiences — opportunities for play, exploration, social engagement, and comfort. Farm animals are capable of a wide range of positive emotional states that are just as real as their capacity for suffering. Enriched housing, outdoor access, social stability, and positive human-animal interactions all promote positive welfare states in farm animals. This expanded understanding creates new opportunities for welfare improvement and new metrics for measuring whether animals are truly thriving.
