Space allowances determine whether animals can perform their natural behavioral repertoire. Animals with insufficient space cannot move freely, escape aggressive conspecifics, or access resources without conflict. The welfare impacts of space restriction are well documented: pigs in overcrowded conditions show escalating tail biting and aggression; chickens below recommended stocking densities have higher rates of hock burns, breast injuries, and mortality; dairy cows in tie-stalls develop lameness and stereotypic behaviors from movement restriction. Setting appropriate minimum space requirements requires balancing welfare evidence with economic feasibility, but the current legal minimums in many jurisdictions fall significantly below what welfare science recommends.
