Play behavior, exploration, social affiliation, and positive human-animal interactions are all indicators that animals are experiencing something beyond mere absence of pain or fear. For livestock, practical positive welfare indicators include proportions of time spent in affiliative social behavior, play activity in young animals, positive responses to human approach, and body condition scores indicating adequate nutrition. These measures are now being incorporated into audit frameworks, giving farmers tools to identify and cultivate genuinely positive animal experience rather than simply meeting minimum standards.
