Deer farming is a growing industry globally. The welfare challenges of farming a semi-wild species include handling stress, antler removal, and appropriate social housing.
Deer farming occupies an unusual position in animal agriculture because deer retain much of the behavioral repertoire and stress responsiveness of their wild counterparts. Unlike cattle or pigs that have been domesticated over thousands of years, farmed deer react to human handling with intense flight responses that cause injuries and acute stress. Routine management procedures including antler removal, ear tagging, and veterinary treatment are therefore significantly more stressful than equivalent procedures in domesticated livestock. Welfare improvements require low-stress handling infrastructure, appropriate group sizes, cover vegetation for shy and fleeing animals, and mandatory anesthesia for painful procedures.
