Wild boar present a genuine tension between agricultural interests and animal welfare. Their intelligence makes capture and confinement particularly stressful — boar have been shown to quickly understand trap mechanisms and avoid them after negative experiences. Their strong family bonds mean that separating sounders during management operations causes significant social stress. Hunting as a management tool varies enormously in welfare impact depending on method: stalking for individual kills is generally more welfare-compliant than driven hunts that may wound multiple animals. Fertility control is being explored as a more humane alternative for suburban population management where targeted hunting is impractical.
