Home aquarium fish welfare is poorly understood by most keepers. Fish are social, cognitively complex, and physiologically sensitive animals whose needs are frequently not met in standard pet-keeping setups. Common failures include inadequate tank size — goldfish routinely housed in bowls experience ammonia poisoning and stunted growth from their own waste; solitary housing of social species causing chronic stress; temperature fluctuations from unheated tanks; and overfeeding causing ammonia spikes that damage gill function. Simple improvements — appropriate tank size, biological filtration, temperature regulation, compatible species groupings, and varied nutrition — dramatically improve the welfare of home aquarium fish.
