Elephant tourism in Asia ranges from genuinely welfare-positive observation experiences to exploitative contact operations. Informed tourist choices matter enormously for individual elephants.
Elephant tourism welfare is not uniform — the distinction between genuinely welfare-positive and exploitative operations is substantial. Observation-only sanctuaries that provide rescued elephants with large natural spaces, appropriate social groups, and natural foraging opportunities can achieve good welfare for animals that were previously kept in poor conditions. Operations that offer riding, shows, painting, and forced bathing rely on trained compliance achieved through aversive methods — the phajaan breaking process that makes elephants tractable enough for tourist contact. The difference is visible in the elephants themselves: animals in good welfare settings show relaxed body posture, social interaction, and active foraging; animals in poor welfare settings show stereotypic swaying and avoidance behaviors.
