Technology is increasingly enabling welfare monitoring at scales previously impossible with manual observation. Automated lameness detection systems that flag individual cows for attention based on gait analysis allow large herds to be welfare-monitored continuously rather than through infrequent manual checks. Rumination monitoring detects health problems days before clinical signs appear. Tail biting detection in pig pens using computer vision allows intervention before injuries become severe. These technologies do not replace skilled stockpersonship but extend it to much larger animal populations. The challenge is ensuring that technology investment genuinely improves welfare outcomes rather than substituting for human care — technology that alerts farmers to problems only improves welfare if those alerts trigger timely responses.
