Barn cats control rodents on farms but often receive minimal veterinary care or welfare consideration. Improving barn cat welfare is achievable with modest effort and significantly benefits the animals.
Barn cats occupy an unusual welfare space — valued for their function but often provided minimal direct care. Working cats with access to shelter, adequate supplementary feeding, and basic veterinary care including vaccination and neutering have significantly better welfare outcomes than those left entirely to fend for themselves. Neutering is particularly important: intact barn cats fight more, transmit disease, and produce litters that add to the population without proportionally reducing rodent pressure. Even minimal investment in barn cat welfare — providing a warm sheltered sleeping area, supplementing hunting with regular food, and vaccinating against common diseases — substantially improves individual welfare while maintaining the working relationship.
