Mechanical brushes represent an unusually strong case in livestock enrichment science: high voluntary use, measurable welfare benefits, simple installation, and low ongoing cost. Cattle are strongly motivated to perform body-grooming behavior and use brushes voluntarily for extended periods when provided. Research shows that cattle with brush access show reduced stereotypic behavior, lower displacement at feeders, and improved behavioral indicators of positive affect. The brush addresses a motivated behavior that cattle in conventional housing cannot otherwise perform, satisfying a real behavioral need rather than providing novel stimulation that habituates.
