Welfare Considerations

Grassland birds evolved with traditional mixed farming landscapes that are now largely gone. The shift to silage production, with multiple cuts per year and heavy fertiliser application, removes the tall, tussocky grass structure these birds require for nesting and feeding. Individual birds and their young face direct mortality from machinery and nest destruction, as well as gradual habitat degradation that reduces food availability and breeding success across landscapes.
