Pet birds including parrots, cockatiels, and finches require social interaction, large spaces, and mental stimulation that most cage environments fail to provide.
The fundamental challenge of companion bird keeping is the mismatch between the complex social, cognitive, and spatial needs of birds and the environments most owners can provide. Parrots in the wild spend their lives in large flocks, travelling large distances, foraging for varied food, and engaging in complex social relationships. A cage in a living room provides none of this complexity. The resulting frustration manifests as feather-destructive behaviour, excessive vocalisation, aggression, and self-mutilation. Birds that have been alone in cages for years show signs comparable to post-traumatic stress when stimulated.
