Welfare Considerations

Extensive pasture-based cattle systems allow animals to express a broader range of natural behaviours than intensive housed systems. Cattle on pasture walk more, lie down for longer periods on comfortable surfaces, and have access to the social complexity of freely structured herds. However, pasture systems are not automatically high welfare: overcrowded pasture causes poaching, social stress, and nutritional deficiencies; inadequate shelter in adverse weather causes cold stress; and parasites pose particular challenges. Good extensive farming requires management skills and attention to individual animal needs that intensive systems can partly substitute with controlled inputs.
