Urban foxes generate disproportionate public concern relative to the actual harm they cause. While fox-chicken conflicts occur and some fox activity causes annoyance, the majority of urban foxes live alongside humans without incident. Management approaches that involve mass trapping and killing are ineffective, expensive, and cause unnecessary suffering; they do not produce sustained population reduction. Mange, when present, causes intense suffering to affected foxes — severe itching, hair loss, and secondary infections. Treatment with licensed medications is effective and the most direct welfare intervention available to residents encountering mangy foxes.
