Cattle are highly social animals with complex hierarchical relationships; management systems that respect their social needs produce better welfare outcomes than those that do not.
The social nature of cattle is fundamental to their welfare. Cows form close bonds with herd mates, have preferred companions, and show distress when separated from familiar individuals. Management practices that involve frequent regrouping — to balance pen weights, accommodate health management, or optimise production — cause repeated social disruption and fighting as hierarchies must be re-established. Stable social groups with consistent membership, even within commercial production constraints, show lower cortisol and less aggressive behaviour. Understanding and respecting cattle social needs is a key component of good welfare management.
