The welfare of coral reef fish is inseparable from the health of reef ecosystems. Fish that depend on coral for shelter, spawning sites, and food find their welfare directly impacted as coral degrades. A fish that loses its shelter site becomes exposed to predation stress it previously avoided; a fish whose food source disappears faces nutritional deficit. Beyond these indirect effects, bleaching events and the associated changes in water chemistry cause direct physiological stress to fish populations. The most effective welfare intervention for reef fish is therefore reef protection through climate action and marine protected area designation.
