Dairy cow housing welfare is shaped by the interaction of space, lying comfort, feed access, and social dynamics. A cubicle that is too small, too hard, or positioned incorrectly causes cows to avoid it — resulting in cows standing for 16+ hours on hard concrete, developing hock injuries, and experiencing the cumulative stress of inadequate rest. The design standards for dairy housing have improved substantially as the evidence for their welfare effects has accumulated, but implementation on existing farms is limited by the cost of retrofitting. New housing construction provides opportunities to embed welfare into design from the outset.
