Providing outdoor access for free-range hens is insufficient alone; the quality and use of outdoor space determines whether genuine welfare benefits are achieved.
The welfare benefit of free-range access depends not on provision alone but on actual use by a meaningful proportion of birds. Many free-range hens in large commercial operations venture only a short distance from pop-holes, if they go outside at all. The density of vegetation, availability of shade and cover, presence of perches outside, and pop-hole size all affect the proportion of birds that actually experience the outdoor environment. Welfare assessment of free-range systems should go beyond confirming outdoor access to monitoring actual range use and the environmental features that encourage meaningful engagement with the outdoor space.
