Guinea pigs have specific nutritional requirements including vitamin C that they cannot synthesise; nutritional deficiencies cause preventable welfare problems in many pet guinea pigs.
Guinea pig nutrition welfare failures are common because the importance of vitamin C is often underestimated or forgotten. A guinea pig developing scurvy experiences progressive joint pain and swelling, haemorrhage into tissues, and deteriorating general condition over weeks or months. The condition is entirely preventable through adequate fresh vegetation or supplementation. The emphasis on dry pellets as a convenient complete diet can mask nutritional inadequacy; pellets do not maintain vitamin C content adequately after opening. Fresh daily provision of vitamin C-rich vegetables alongside unlimited hay provides both the nutrients and the fibre-based dental wear that guinea pig health requires.
