Birds have four types of colour receptors compared to three in humans, perceiving UV wavelengths; this affects how they experience artificial light and environmental design in captivity.
Bird vision extends into the UV spectrum in ways that have practical welfare implications for captive birds and for window collision prevention. Captive birds under standard artificial lighting that lacks UV components may experience impaired plumage recognition, reduced ability to find food through UV-reflective visual cues, and potentially disrupted circadian rhythms. Full-spectrum lighting that includes UV components is therefore a welfare improvement for captive birds. For window collisions, the UV-reflecting properties of glass may actually make glass more visible to birds than previously thought — requiring UV-opaque rather than UV-transparent treatments to reduce collisions effectively.
