Welfare Considerations

Composite welfare indices represent the most comprehensive approach to farm welfare assessment currently available. Rather than assessing individual welfare dimensions in isolation, they combine multiple animal-based measures into an overall welfare picture that can be scored, compared, and tracked over time. The Welfare Quality protocols developed in Europe cover twelve welfare criteria across four principles — good feeding, good housing, good health, and appropriate behaviour — generating a farm-level welfare score that reflects the lived experience of animals rather than simply the resources provided. Implementation in commercial auditing is challenging but growing, representing a genuine advance in the operational application of welfare science.
