Seed-only diets are nutritionally inadequate for most pet bird species; transitioning to pellet-based diets with fresh food supplements significantly improves welfare outcomes.
Seed-based diets for pet birds have historically been marketed as natural and complete, but the nutritional inadequacy of seeds as a sole diet causes chronic malnutrition in the majority of seed-eating pet bird species. Budgerigars on all-seed diets commonly develop fatty liver disease from the high fat content of millet and sunflower seeds; nutritional deficiencies cause feather abnormalities and immune suppression in parrots. The transition from seeds to pellets and fresh food requires time and behavioural management because birds often refuse novel foods initially. But the welfare investment is substantial: nutritionally complete diets add years to the lives of commonly kept species.
