Proposals to formally reintroduce wild boar to Scotland raise questions about the welfare of the animals to be reintroduced and the management framework needed to support them.
Wild boar reintroduction welfare requires thinking through the lives that reintroduced animals will live — not just whether the population can survive but whether individual animals will experience good welfare in their new environment. Formal reintroduction with adequate habitat and protected status provides conditions for good welfare: appropriate social structures, sufficient foraging range, and freedom from persecution. Informal feral populations face management pressures — lethal control responding to agricultural conflict — that create welfare problems for individual animals. A formal reintroduction programme with clear management frameworks, adequate habitat, and public support provides a much better welfare context for individual boar than the current informal situation.
