Welfare Considerations

Reptile pain and distress are less behaviorally obvious than in mammals, leading to prolonged suffering from incorrect temperatures, humidity, or UV provision. Metabolic bone disease from UV deficiency causes severe bone pain and deformity. Many reptiles in pet shops are wild-caught despite captive breeding availability.

What You Can Do

Research species-specific requirements thoroughly before acquiring any reptile
Only purchase captive-bred reptiles from reputable breeders
Provide correct thermal gradients, UV lighting, and appropriate enclosure sizes
Never release captive reptiles into the wild — they become invasive or die
