Tortoise Hibernation: Managing a Critical Welfare Period

Hibernation is essential for tortoise health but the period carries significant welfare risks if not properly managed.

Welfare Considerations

Tortoises that enter hibernation underweight or unwell may not survive. Those hibernated at incorrect temperatures may rouse intermittently, burning reserves without being able to feed. Fungal and bacterial infections during hibernation cause suffering and death. Correctly managed hibernation is welfare-positive; poorly managed hibernation creates serious welfare risks.
