Rabbit Gut Health and Welfare

Gut stasis is the most common emergency in pet rabbits and is almost entirely preventable through appropriate diet and enrichment.

Welfare Considerations

GI stasis causes progressive pain as gas accumulates and gut motility ceases. Rabbits in stasis show teeth grinding, hunching, and reluctance to move that indicate significant pain. Prevention through adequate hay provision, stress reduction, and dental care is far more effective than treatment. The welfare importance of hay as the dietary staple cannot be overstated.

What You Can Do

Provide unlimited timothy or meadow hay as the absolute dietary foundation
Know the signs of GI stasis and seek veterinary attention within 12 hours of suspected onset
Minimize environmental stressors including loud noises and rough handling
Ensure dental checks are regular so dental pain does not cause secondary gut problems
