Wild Animal Rescue: When to Act and When to Leave

Understanding when wild animals genuinely need rescue versus when intervention causes harm is essential for well-intentioned wildlife helpers.

Welfare Considerations

Incorrect intervention causes additional trauma through capture stress, inappropriate handling, inappropriate diet, and separation from parents who were still providing care. Well-intentioned rescues of healthy fledglings condemn them to rehabilitation when they would have fledged naturally within days. Knowing when not to intervene is as important as knowing how to help when needed.
