Zoo elephants frequently suffer from foot problems caused by hard substrates, obesity from reduced movement, and psychological distress from social deprivation. Elephants are cognitively complex with strong social bonds; isolation or incompatible groupings cause chronic stress. Leading sanctuaries and reformed zoos provide much better conditions.
