Broiler chickens are the most numerically significant farmed animal; improving their welfare would reduce more animal suffering than almost any other intervention.
Fast-growing broiler breeds suffer from skeletal disorders caused by rapid muscle development that outpaces bone growth, metabolic conditions including ascites, and cardiovascular disease. Many birds are lame and struggle to reach food and water in their final days. Switching to slower-growing breeds with outdoor access and reduced stocking densities dramatically improves welfare.
