Tortoises are long-lived reptiles requiring specialized care; their welfare in captivity depends on appropriate temperature, nutrition, and space.
Tortoises require outdoor access in summer, appropriate hibernation conditions, high-fiber varied plant diets, and UVB lighting for calcium metabolism. Substrate depth must allow burrowing behavior. Many tortoises in captivity are kept in inadequate conditions causing metabolic bone disease, pyramiding of the shell, and shortened lifespan. Welfare awareness has improved but many owners still lack adequate knowledge.
