Water is the most fundamental nutritional requirement for farm animals. Deprivation — even partial, through inadequate flow rates or trough space — causes stress, reduces food intake, and impairs immune function. In hot weather, insufficient water access causes heat stress and can kill livestock rapidly. Basic welfare standards include continuous access to clean water in adequate quantities for all housed animals.
