Growing awareness of fish welfare is changing consumer attitudes and beginning to influence purchasing, policy, and industry practices.
Fish welfare has been systematically neglected compared to mammal and bird welfare, partly because fish are less visibly expressive of pain and distress. Growing public awareness, driven by welfare science communication and advocacy campaigns, is beginning to close this gap. Consumer choices, industry certification standards, and government regulation are all beginning to incorporate fish welfare considerations.
