Manatees struck by boat propellers suffer catastrophic injuries including deep lacerations, severed flippers, and spinal trauma. Many survive with permanent injuries that limit feeding and movement. Cold stress syndrome occurs when water temperatures drop below 68F, causing manatees to crowd warm water refuges where they become vulnerable to further boat strikes.
